Look fellas...I agree that autotune is played out, but a s musician & not just a holder of a microphone, I would humbly suggest of you in the future, to get your terms right. Autotune & the Vocoder are 2 totally different things, for cryin' out loud! Geez! YOU MUST NOT PUT ROGER TROUTMAN (who used & mastered the 'TalkBox'; sometimes referred to as a 'Vocoder', in which that, the vocoder was mastered by HERBIE HANCOCK & TEDDY RILEY) in the same ramble mouthed sentence as T-PAIN!! He uses something called autotune that is not even uesd like a Talkbox or Vocoder. It takes skill to use the Vocoder or Talkbox fellas. You have to press the keyboard notes at the smae time while singing, where as Autotune is simply a plug in where one doesn't even have to lift a finger. It's just on demand, which is what T-PAIN is, interestingly... & wierdly,....getting props from you guys for doing. So, please get it straight 'hip-hop headz' before you start putting up pics of the great Funksta; ROGER TROUTMAN next to buffoons like T-PAIN using something as SIMPLE as 'Autotune'. Done deal. - THE FUNK!! |

The Funk,
I hear your point, here. Let me say this: everybody on that panel knows the difference between the AutoTune and the Vocoder. We actually interchanged the terms (wrongly) but we were referring to AutoTune that T-Pain used. Now, the AutoTune SOUND was/is an extension of the Vocoder. Though the Vocoder actually took more playing skill, the AutoTune program can be fairly discussed when explaining the lineage of the Vocoder. Like, it goes: The Talk Box, the Vocoder, and now The AutoTune. So, in explaining the thing it is fair to say where it came from. While there is a more thorough version of history to be explored, it might be too much to cram into the 3 minutes shown here. But I dig where you're coming from. And I'm still not mad at T-Pain for his voice effect. I mean, I'm sure you've heard others try it and they ain't all sounding so good. Either way, thanks for your thorough thoughts THE FUNK. Much appreciated. -e. parker |

G'head, ask us anything. If we don't get to the bottom of it, the bottom doesn't exist. |
