Poker is a family of card games which are played worldwide. These games vary in the number of players involved, the number of cards in play, and the structure of the betting rounds. A typical poker game begins by the dealer, or nominal dealer, making a forced bet, also known as an ante. This bet is usually equal to the amount of the pot, including all previous bets. If the player does not match the bet, he is forced to fold.
After all but one player has folded, a player with the highest hand wins the pot. In some variants, the pot is split between the highest and lowest hands. Typically, a poker hand comprises five cards. It can include four of a kind, a straight, or a flush. Other poker variations consider other cards in the hand.
Some variations have a pot-limit format, in which the player can bet any amount up to the limit. For instance, a seven-card stud requires a player to have the best five-card hand. Others do not count flushes or straights, or award the pot to the lowest hand.
Another variation, often called strip poker, requires a basic betting mechanic, but is based on simple variants. The player is dealt a hand, and then each of the other players can discard two or three cards. Those discarded cards are then replaced by new cards.
Poker has developed from simple games to more complex forms over the years. It is a widely accepted form of gambling, and has been a favorite pastime for people throughout the world. While poker is most commonly played with a standard deck of cards, it is also a game of skill and bluffing. Unlike other vying games, such as chess and backgammon, the primary feature of poker is bluffing. When a player bluffs, he may place additional money in the pot to make the other players think that they have a higher hand.
